Here is How to Stop Drinking Alcohol

Not to mislead anyone - it can be extremely difficult for a real alcoholic to find sobriety. If you are a true alcoholic and not just a problem drinker then the problem can be particularly challenging. Here is a good outline of a recovery program for any struggling alcoholic who really wants to change their life.

First, you must make the decision to stop drinking for good. While this might be obvious, many people who try to get clean and sober will suddenly realize that they really did not have their mind set on it in the first place. A lot of times people will try to get sober for someone else, and this just doesn’t work. The drive to stop drinking has to come from within, and it must be a very strong drive in order to overcome the temptation of relapse.

Second of all, I would highly recommend a medical detox facility.Withdrawaling from alcohol is very risky can can actually kill a person if they are not being watched closely.Best if you can get help from a trained medical staff to see you through this safely.

Third, I would recommend that you follow up this detox with a brief stay in a residential treatment facility. Going to residential treatment can have a number of added benefits:

1) You will have the safety and comfort of a protected environment where there are no opportunities for temptation to sneak in.

2) You will have groups and lectures that give you tools to learn how to recover from alcoholism.

3) You will meet a peer group that can help support you when you leave.

4) You will likely be introduced to 12 step meetings there that can help add support for your program.

5) You will get a counselor who will work with you directly in helping you to overcome your personal issues that might have led you to drink.

6) The counselors will find you a solid follow up plan for when you leave treatment so that you have a better chance at maintaining sobriety.

Treatment can be expensive in some cases but the cost is easily minimized if you manage to stay sober in the long run.In other terms, the pluses outweight the minuses by quite a bit, regardless of how much it cost you upfront to attend.

So to recap, you need 3 things to get started:

1) Make a decision to learn how to stop drinking.

2) Find a treatment center that can detox you.

3) Get yourself to rehab and stay open to any new ideas you might hear.
